Win With Min!
Red Wing City Council
Vote August 9th!
My name is Min MartinOakes, and I am running for the vacant Ward 2 seat on Red Wing City Council.
My background has lead me to the place I am today and to the decision to run for Red Wing City Council. I am a first generation American. My parents came here after World War II due to the extreme housing shortage in their homeland. I was immersed from the start in what it means to love my country and to love democracy. I learned to value public education and knew deeply how important it was to welcome others; especially those who were not like me. I attended public schools in the Chicago area where I grew up as well as a public university.
I was privileged to serve for many years in public schools as both a teacher and a school administrator. Because of my work in the schools I got to know families well and saw thru their eyes what the challenges of our community are. I came to Red Wing in 1992 and love this place with all my heart. I take serving my community seriously and serving on city council will be an honor and a privilege that I intend to earn.
I’m so very proud to be able to work on sustainability efforts in Red Wing as part of the Sustainability Commission. If elected to the city council, I am committed to continuing to support such efforts.
What I Stand For and Believe In
The things I value above all else are family, community, fairness, integrity, joy and the planet. It is important to me to contribute to the greater good and to serve my community and world in meaningful ways. We all have a responsibility to care for our neighbors and our planet and we always have a responsibility to “draw the circle larger” – thereby enriching our lives and the fabric of our community.
I feel as if so much of what I’ve done so far in life has prepared me for this work.
Public School Experience
I have served in public schools as a teacher and school administrator for 45 years; 30 of those in Red Wing. Working in the schools helped me develop and refine my leadership skills and helped me learn to work with many different kinds of people. I also had the privilege of getting to know so many families raising children in our community and understood the challenges and opportunities that they faced in our community.
Community Involvement
Beyond my work In the schools, I have served on two community theater boards and been a frequent volunteer to both groups. I serve as a volunteer for the Red Wing Food Shelf, serve on the Red Wing Sustainability Commission as well as the Red Wing Charter Commission.
A Part of Red Wing
I am a mom of four and a grandmother of 5 and have been married to my amazing husband, David, for 27 years. I LOVE Red Wing and, if elected, commit to listening, learning, acting inclusively and with integrity on each issue that comes before the council. I humbly ask for your vote on August 9.
